What Gifts Should You Get For Your Team This Christmas?
Giving your staff gifts at Christmas is the perfect way to show your appreciation for all of their hard work over the year. Chances are, you probably don’t want to leave it up to office secret santas with a £10 limit to see your staff get a Christmas present. Instead, you’re looking for a way to boost office morale and say thank you to your staff with a suitable gift.
Well, you’re in the right place! We’ve put together this handy blog post on everything you need to know to help you give your employees a company Christmas they won’t forget.
Should you give gifts to all of your employees?
As a general rule of thumb, if you’re planning to give Christmas gifts to your staff this year, you can’t pick and choose who’s getting one. It’s no one, or the whole office, otherwise it creates a distinct sense of favouritism.
The only way to avoid this would be to create festive incentives with prizes. However, this doesn’t really count as giving gifts if your employees are working for the gift!
What type of gifts should you give to your staff?
There’s a whole range of options to choose from when it comes to staff Christmas gifts, so have a good think about what works best for you and your team. Office Christmas presents shouldn’t be boring - in fact, the more personality, the more genuine they seem! Think about your company’s atmosphere, values and ethos. These things probably resonate with your staff and will make it easier to narrow down appropriate gifts.
That being said, decide whether everyone is getting the same gift, or something different. Is this going to be randomly decided upon? If you have a large team, it may be easiest to give everyone the same, or a variation of the same gift. You could even look into personalised Christmas gifts for your staff.
On the other hand, if you don’t have a huge office and you and your team know each other pretty well, you might be able to consider each person individually and give them something more personal to them.
In this case, you could even consider getting an office advent calendar, so that each member of staff gets a gift each day during the lead up to Christmas - it also makes for a fun festive activity for the whole team! There are so many alternative advent calendar options out there now, that this doesn’t have to just be a piece of chocolate - go wild and choose what suits your team the most!
What are some popular gifts for corporate teams?
- Christmas gift hampers
There are a range of gifting companies who provide curated corporate gifting solutions (like us!) who almost definitely have a ready to go range of Christmas gift hampers available. These are such a perfect gift idea, as you can often choose from food hampers and gift baskets with a variety of products inside. Moreover, you can choose something that fits in with your budget, as gift hampers are often available at various different price points, whilst still being great value for money.

Hampers also take away the stress around whether everyone is going to like whatever gift you choose. Let’s be honest, gifting is difficult, and a gift basket will have multiple products so there’s bound to be something for everyone.
2. Gift cards and vouchers
Another great, flexible option, gift cards give your staff the opportunity to choose their own gift! You can easily find gift cards that are accepted at multiple locations, so that everyone has the chance to find something they like. Or, give vouchers for restaurants - whether that’s a set monetary amount or a discount, who doesn’t love a meal out!
3. Experience-based gifts
This could be a brilliant opportunity to take the team out and spend some time together, or a fun way for them to try something new. For those still working from home most of the time - fear not! During the pandemic we’ve seen a huge rise in online experiences, like zoom cocktail classes or cooking sessions.
Here’s a list of other present ideas for the end of the year:
- Cinema vouchers
- Desk accessories
- A bottle of wine (just be sure to check if any of your staff don’t drink!)
Sustainable Corporate Gifting
What if you’re looking for some more ethical, eco-friendly staff gifts this year? Perhaps you’re working towards your B Corp certification and want to continue encouraging sustainability in all areas of your business. Well, you’re in luck! There are more and more ways to give eco-conscious, socially responsible gifts thanks to the variety of gifting options out there.
One of the most important things about impactful gifting is that there’s often a story to be told behind the products. You start to think more about how your gift is making a difference and having an impact on a real life somewhere. We like to include an impact receipt when you place an order with us, so you know exactly how your purchase is supporting people and causes across the country.
This ‘pause for thought’ moment is also prevalent when you give an environmentally friendly gift. People don’t want throwaway products anymore as we move towards a more and more reusable, circular economy. For companies wanting to improve their dedication to sustainability and the environment, looking for greener gifts is a great way to incorporate these responsibilities into your business.
Moreover, supporting ethical and sustainable corporate gifting companies also lets them know that people care about their mission. It demonstrates a certain sensibility amongst their customers and helps them carry on making a difference! It also helps them reach an entirely new customer base, by sharing their products with your team.
The best thing about socially responsible corporate gifting is that you know you’re giving back whilst you gift. Your office gifts could be helping refugees find employment, championing marginalised communities or supporting the effort to reverse some of the already devastating damage to our planet, before it’s too late.
Are staff Christmas gifts tax deductible in the UK?
We know you’re all wondering - so let's look into it!
You can spend up to £50 (including VAT) on employee gifts and it counts as a trivial benefit exemption - so you won’t have to worry about NI or tax. However, this cannot be cash or a gift voucher, it has to be in the form of a gift.
If the gift exceeds the £50 price tag, then the entire value of the product is taxable, not just that over £50.
If the gift is to a group and perhaps has various values or it does not make sense to work out exact costs per individual, the cost should be worked out at an average price per head (for example, if you take staff for a meal and they order different items therefore the exact cost per person differs, but the average price per head is still £50 or less, this is fine. If the average price per head is over £50, then trivial benefit rules do not apply).
As it’s a Christmas gift, there is a valid reason for the gift not to be considered as provided in recognition of work done for the company - gifts for this reason have slightly different rules. These rules are part of the trivial benefit exemption rules and have been in place since 2016. See HMRC for more details.
So, if Christmas gifts for your team are on the cards this festive season, be sure to keep this in mind whilst you’re shopping around.
